Four AC Maintenance Tips from a Wheaton Air Conditioner Company

In order for an air conditioner to run at maximum capacity, it must be properly maintained. Failure to maintain your AC can result in both efficiency and lifespan issues.

The question is: what does AC maintenance entail? We’re going to discuss that below. Here are four AC maintenance tips from a Wheaton air conditioner company.

1. Clear the Condenser Area

When it comes to air conditioners, the condenser is the heart of the system. If it’s not operating properly, the rest of the AC system will fail to operate properly as well. As such, it’s important that you keep an eye on it, ensuring that it’s clear of miscellaneous residue.

Not only should you look out for stones, leaves, and sticks falling into the condenser, but you should also make sure that the condenser has plenty of room to take in air. At a minimum, air conditioner condensers need five feet of clearance in order to perform their jobs. Therefore, if necessary, you should trim and cut any hedges, bushes, or trees in your condenser’s proximity.

2. Straighten the Fins

On the outside of every air conditioner condenser is an array of thin metal strips. These strips are known as fins, and they are vital to the performance of the AC unit as a whole.

Unfortunately, over time, these fins can become bent and misshapen. When this occurs, they struggle to perform their job as needed.

For this reason, you’ll want to straighten these fins every six months or so. You can simply grab a butter knife or letter opener and run it between each fin. Doing so will create adequate separation between the fins, allowing them to perform their responsibility in the way that they’re designed to.

3. Replace the Filter

Each HVAC system is equipped with an air filter. This air filter is used to catch stray dust and debris, thereby preventing it from entering the system’s ducts and operational mechanisms, allowing the AC to function at full capacity.

As you might expect, HVAC air filters can get very dirty very quickly. In order to maintain proper efficiency, you should replace these filters on a regular basis.

In most cases, AC filter replacements are required every three months or so. That said, if you have dogs or cats in your home, you should think about making a filter change every one or two months instead.

4. Install a Programmable Thermostat

Simply put, the more an air conditioner runs, the more wear and tear it suffers. The more wear and tear it suffers, the shorter its lifespan will end up being. As such, if you want to get the most out of your air conditioner, it’s recommended that you only run the system when it’s absolutely necessary.

How can this be achieved? The best solution is to install a programmable thermostat. Programmable thermostats allow you to automate the operation of your air conditioner. Not only do they allow you to schedule turn-on times, but turn-off times as well. In fact, they even allow for automated temperature adjustments.

By utilizing a programmable thermostat as opposed to a traditional thermostat, you can cut your AC usage by 25% to 50%. This reduction in usage is substantial, and it can even help your AC to thrive for a few more years than it otherwise would.
