5 Signs that Indicate Your Chicagoland Residential or Commercial Air Conditioner Needs Repair
You might have heard the adage “a stitch in time saves nine”. Well, the same is true for your air conditioner unit as well. It’s easier, less time consuming, and more economical when a problem is detected early on, rather than when it becomes more pronounced if left unattended.
Summers in Chicago can get hot, and the last thing you would want is to be left in a hot and stuffy home or business when your air conditioner breaks down.
Here are five signs that your air conditioner may need to be repaired:
1. AC is Blowing Hot Air
If your air conditioner is not doing its primary job, it needs immediate attention. On the less severe side, the problem could be a thermostat malfunction. In the worst scenario, it could be a broken compressor. Either way, if your AC unit is blowing hot air, it needs to be addressed immediately so that it does not induce additional strain on the unit, causing wear and tear of supporting parts.
2. Moisture Near Your Cooling Unit
An active leak or pooled water near your air conditioning unit could mean one of two things. It could be something minor such as a blockage in the drain, or the moisture could be due to a refrigerant leak, which is more serious and can even be a safety hazard. In either case, any moisture accumulation needs to be attended to immediately to avoid any mold growth or structural damage near the cooling unit.
3. Increase in Humidity Level
Spring and summer in Chicago can get sticky and stuffy, but that doesn’t mean you need to experience the same stuffiness in your home or business. Your air conditioner is designed to regulate the humidity at the set specification of the unit. If the humidity is not at your desired comfort level, it needs to be inspected to diagnose if it needs a simple re-calibration or even whole-house dehumidification.
4. Unusual Odor or Sounds
You have to trust your sense with this one. While it may be normal for a motor to be a little loud, if you hear any grating, squealing, grinding, or a sudden cling or bang, it definitely needs to be addressed. Similarly, a strong pungent smell may indicate that an insulation wire is burnt, and a musty smell might indicate mold growth in the unit or in the duct, which needs to be addressed.
5. Inadequate Air Flow
Improper air flow could either be due to a broken motor, a clogged air filter, or something even more serious. If you frequently notice insufficient airflow, it is best to invest in an energy-recovery ventilator. This helps in boosting the air flow if the cooling system cycles. Another option would be to create a zoning system whereby you are able to target the airflow to the areas where you need it the most.
Although it is common for the air conditioner to have a cycle to meet the demands of hot and sunny days, it should not be doing that constantly. If you notice frequent cycling, it could be an indication that you need a tune-up, or in the worst-case scenario, it might be time to replace your old air conditioner.
