INSTALLING A RESIDENTIAL OR COMMERCIAL FURNACE IN CHICAGOLAND
It’s a widely accepted practice that a furnace is installed by an HVAC company or contractor. However, as a homeowner or business owner in Chicagoland, you should be aware of the installation process so that you are not deceived by a dishonest contractor who might take shortcuts and charge you more for the work performed.
Here are six steps that must be followed when installing a new furnace in your Chicagoland home or business:
1. FURNACE SELECTION
In order to select a furnace that best meets the requirement of your home or business, the HVAC company first needs to run an assessment of the house to check the placement of doors, windows, the basement area, and entire building layout.
The contractor will then work with you to identify a location that is ideal for the placement of the heating system. Normally, it is either a mechanical room in the center of the house or a secluded place in the basement.
2. DUCTWORK ASSESSMENT
Ductwork assessment is the next vital step in installing the furnace. The HVAC company needs to map out the ductwork to ensure that it is enough for the heating system. In some cases, it could be required that adjustments are made to the existing ductwork, or a new duct may need to be put in place.
Failure to access the heating system ductwork accurately could result in installing a furnace that is either too small or too big for home. This could later lead to time-consuming rework for the furnace setup.
3. CREATE A MATERIAL LIST
Once the furnace has been finalized, the HVAC company needs to create a list of materials required to complete the entire implementation. It’s best to ask for a copy of this list so that you can cross check it with the itemized bill that you receive for the total project. This gives you financial control for the entire furnace installation project.
4. PROCURE PERMITS
Before initiating the furnace work, the HVAC company will need to receive permits from the local governing body. A reputable company will always have this with them and will not require any paperwork to be filed by you.
Before the contractor begins the work, ask if they have the necessary permits. If they do not have a required permit, the work could be halted, resulting in a delay in completing the project.
5. REMOVE OLD EQUIPMENT
Once you approve the procurement of materials, the HVAC company will disconnect the power supply and begin removing old equipment. Existing ductwork is generally left in place unless it requires minor changes or alterations.
6. INSTALLATION OF A NEW FURNACE
After the old equipment has been removed, the final step is to install the new furnace. This is a technical process which requires the furnace installation company to:
- Align the new furnace with the existing ductwork
- Attach the new furnace’s boot and return
- Fixing the plenum
- Checking gas line for leaks and reconnecting them
- Eliminating residual fuel gases from the pipes
- Attaching the thermostat
- Light the pilot light and turn the power on
At the completion of the project and successful installation of the furnace, request an itemized bill so that you can verify that the charges on the bill are accurate.
